Negative Calorie Foods - Lose Weight By Eating

I love grapefruits and have since I was a kid. I generally have a grapefruit with breakfast everyday. What I didn't know until recently was that eating grapefruits was helping me to maintain my optimum weight.

It turns out that a grapefruit is a negative calorie food. A negative calorie food is any food product that causes the body to burn more calories to digest and process (accessing the nutrients) than the number of calories that food provides to the body. If a food contains, say 10 calories, but it takes 11 calories or more to digest it, it is a negative calorie food.

My grapefruit helps me to maintain a daily calorie balance by compensating for the calories contained in something else I will eat. Of course, I am also getting some vitamin C, fiber and other nutrients from the fruit.

There are many Negative Calorie Foods, which you can add to your diet to help you maintain or lose weight. Such foods include apples, onions, cucumbers, chili - about 100 food items that are readily available to most consumers. Beyond helping you lose weight, these foods are good for you in many other ways, providing anti-oxidants, minerals, vitamins, fiber, etc.

If you are interested in learning more about Negative Calorie Foods, I recommend the Negative Calorie Foods & Recipes e-Book, it contains, a list of negative calorie foods, recipes and diet plans. For more information, click here.

No Colds for the Last Two Years Plus!

With the weather turning cold and snowy across the country, people are becoming concerned about colds and flues. We tend to get more severe colds during the winter months, in part, because of a change in our metabolisms, and, in part, because we are more likely to encounter people in closed spaces (keeping warm) and have more chances to spread viruses.

I was checking my health journal the other day and realized that I am now approaching my third winter without suffering from a major bout with colds or flues. I have one or two day during the last 2 and half years where I may have had a cold, but nothing symptomatic that lasted longer than that.

What have I been doing right? I have been eating better, getting regular exercise and taking my various vitamins, but I started doing something two plus years ago that I think I can now say has made a difference.

I began to wear a pair of Alex Chui's Immortality Rings. This is a set of two rings with magnets that are worn on the pinkie fingers while sleeping. Their purpose is to maintain one's health and reverse the aging process. While it is hard to quantify that may cells have gotten younger. I am over 54 and can say that my face has no new wrinkles, my hair is the same brownish color and my joints seem to ache less often. Still immortality is hard reach until you lived a long time.

But on the health front, no colds and flues for such a long period of time is remarkable for me. And I am beginning to give the Immortality Rings the credit.

If you are interested in finding out more about Alex Chui's Immortality Rings, Click here.

I recommend the Immortality Neodymium Rings as they are more powerful.

Yoga and ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

There is much evidence that regular physical activity is good for those who have ADD (with or without hyperactivity). Not too surprising because physical exercise for 30 minutes, 3-5 days a week, is good for every man, woman and child on the planet. Still for those with ADD such exercise can balance the production of neurotransmitters and reduce stress levels.

The Grinding Truth, Injured While Sleeping

There is a Cure for Bruxism...

Most people have heard of injuries caused by repeated stress activities - doing the same physical movement over and over again, day after day, can cause nerve and other tissue damage to occur.

This same problem can happen while you are sleeping! For example, do you grind your teeth when you are asleep?

Bruxism or teeth grinding is a real health concern. Bruxism is related to: • Painful teeth in the morning. • Your jaw hurts in the morning. • You feel pain around the upper jaw below the temples while eating. • Your teeth are flat and worn away. • You have unexplained chips on your teeth. • Your teeth are sensitive to cold and citrus. • You have constant headaches • You constantly wake up during the night.

Grinding one's teeth at night is nothing to take lightly. If you find that you are suffering from this problem and nothing you have done has stopped it. Don't give up.

For more information about Bruxism and how to stop grinding your teeth please visit Cure for Bruxism today.

Constipation is No Fun - Natural Remedies.

Constipation is a simple problem, but it should be taken seriously. Basically, constipation is a condition when you are having fewer bowel movements than you should be having. And it is not a laughing matter. Everyone experience constipation occasionally, but if you are experiencing extended periods of constipation your health is at risk.

It is known that constipation is responsible for many colon diseases such as hemorrhoids, colitis, diverticulosis, IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, varicose veins, and possibly colon cancer. The origin of many diseases in the body can be traced to a constipated colon.

Generally, lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet are the culprits. What can you do if you suffer from constipation? There are many dietary changes you can make. Eat grapes for temporary and chronic relief! Drink dandelion tea! A teaspoon of good honey in a cup of warm water, taken each morning can lead to the relief of constipation.

If you experience constant bloating, heartburn and constipation on a regular basis, you can do something about it. For ways to correct these problems, I recommend Colon Cleanse Your Way To Better Health.

Canadians Told To Take Vitamin D

A hearty recommendation has been made by the Canadian Cancer Society to take Vitamin D supplements.

A recent study by researchers at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., found that people with higher levels of vitamin D when they entered the study had an impressive 72 per cent reduced risk of dying from colorectal cancer, compared to those with the lowest levels of vitamin D.

Our bodies use sunshine to manufacture Vitamin D. Due to the less overall sunshine in Canada, Canadians are less likely to produce the Vitamin D they need, thus the suggestion that all Canadians add Vitamin D supplements to their diet. American, too, may not be getting enough Vitamin D.

Once again, how we handle our diet, is shown to effect our health. Check with your doctor to see if you need to supplement your diet with Vitamin D. Don't go crazy about this, Vitamin D is not a magic bullet, but you do need to have enough of it in your system for good health.

Polyps Benign!

In my previous blog posting, I talked about the colonoscopy I underwent. The procedure, which used up a couple of hours on a Tuesday afternoon, included the removal of several polyps. These polyps or portions of them were sent to a lab to be analyzed.

The results have come back and it was all good news. First, I had two different types of polyps growing on my intestine walls. One type does not get cancerous and the other type can become cancerous. Thankfully, in my case, the polyps that were of the second type were not cancerous. Hurray! I am very glad that they were benign and were removed before they could change into a threat to my life. I do take selenium and other cancer fighting supplements such as various anti-oxidants, perhaps that helped. And I eats me greens...

Anyway, eat wisely and check with your doctor about the health of your colon.

Best wishes to all.

Colon Cancer and Diet

This week I underwent a colonoscopy. Not the most pleasant afternoon I have ever spent, but the results may extend my life by several years. The purpose of a colonoscopy is to check for colon cancer.

This procedure involves a doctor threading a tube with a camera up your rectum to examine the large intestine (the large intestine is comprised of a short section called the rectum and a much longer section called the colon). The doctor is looking for unusual growths on the intestine wall called polyps. If polyps are found, they are removed, if possible, and biopsied to check for cancer (colon cancer). If the polyps are found to be cancerous, surgery is required to remove the part of the intestine where the cancerous polyp occurred and to remove any remaining polyps.

Up to 30 percent of adults, middle-aged and older have colon polyps. Thankfully, the survival rates from colon cancer, if found soon enough, is very high. There can be a genetic component to getting colon cancer. Check with your older siblings and parents to see if they have developed polyps. If they have, you need to get checked as well, especially after the age of 40.

Your diet can help you prevent the formation of polyps and colon cancer. Eating a high-fiber diet - one plentiful in fruits, vegetables and whole grains is recommended. Fiber helps to move your stool more quickly through the bowel. This limits the time that cancer-causing substances (carcinogens) in your food are in contact with your intestines. Also the anti-oxidants in the fruits and vegetables help protect your cells from damage by free radicals (unstable molecules) that can lead to cancer.

Daily exercise is also a good preventative measure as exercise speeds up the movement of the stool through the bowel as well.

Again this commonsense approach of a good, natural diet coupled with daily physical movement is a key component to the prevention of many diseases including colon cancer.

Change Your Diet, Eat Real Foods

This simple message,
Change Your Diet, Eat Real Foods
should be posted over every grocery store in America. Of course, if Americans followed through with this message, most packaged and processed items on the grocery store shelves would disappear. But would that be a bad thing?

I haven't eaten a "chip," potato or otherwise, for 15 years and guess what? Life is still good! There must be 10,000 items in my grocery store I will never put into my mouth. Why? Because I have grown up past having my taste buds rule my choices and only buy food that has real nutritional value. And there is a simple reason for this, I want to live the healthiest life I can.

Note that the American Cancer Institute says about one third of cancer deaths in 2006 were related to improper nutrition, physical inactivity and being overweight -- and could have been prevented. And if you haven't noticed diabetes rates are up and heart attacks are up and America's health care system is not preventing these disease from increasing. Simply put - Americans have stopped eating real foods, they feed junk to their kids and the results are obvious: We are fat and dying from illnesses that are preventable.

If our society is going to change health-wise and work-wise, you and I have to make changes. And saying no to food that is meaningless beyond it's easy and fast is a necessary step in creating an America that leads the world in healthy citizens.

Pumpkins Scare Away Diabetes (Type 1)

Natural ways to treat diabetes continue to be found. This week scientists reported that a compound found in pumpkins promote the regeneration of damaged insulin-producing beta cells in diabetic rats, thereby improving the level of insulin in their blood.

If this ability of pumpkins to help rats is also successful for humans, this is good news for those suffering from Type 1 Diabetes. People with Type 1 Diabetes do not produce enough of their own insulin and must rely on insulin injections to manage their blood sugar levels. Insulin, produced by the pancreas, is used by the body to transfer blood sugar into the body’s cells. A beta cell is a cell that makes insulin. Beta cells are located in the islets of the pancreas.

Researchers at the East China Normal University found that pumpkin extract promotes regeneration of damaged pancreatic cells in diabetic rats, boosting levels of insulin-producing beta cells and insulin in the blood. The protective effect of pumpkin is thought to be due to both antioxidants and D-chiro-inositol, a molecule that mediates insulin activity. The scientists also stated that pumpkin extract is potentially a good product for people who are pre-diabetic, as well as those who have already developed diabetes.

While pumpkins may not eliminate the need to take insulin injections, it could decrease the amount of insulin a patient needs to inject each day.

By the way, pumpkins are not the only plant thought to help control blood sugar levels. Onion, ground fenugreek seeds and broccoli are also potential aids in the fight against Diabetes. Israeli scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have shown that fenugreek seeds can lower blood sugar and cholesterol in both diabetics and healthy people.

So if you are concerned about your blood sugar levels, start adding more pumpkin, onion, ground fenugreek seeds and broccoli to your diet.

Fat in the Diet and Diabetes

Too much fat in your diet is a health risk for cardiovascular disease and for diabetes as well. Everyone thinks it is just the sugar in our diet that leads to diabetes, but fat can be a problem as well.

A recent study by scientists at the University of California, San Diego, found that overdoing it on fatty foods appears to suppress the action of GnT-4a, the single gene that controls the production of the hormone insulin. Insulin is the chemical the body uses to regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels in check. And consistently high glucose levels in the blood is the hallmark of diabetes.

"The results of the study, which was done on mice, have the potential to explain how diet influences the development of type II diabetes in people," says study author Jamey Marth, Ph.D. Scientists are now trying to find out what causes the gene to stop doing its work - and how to correct it.

While researchers continue to pursue this avenue, you can do something to prevent diabetes from developing. Trim the fat from your diet. A low fat diet containing healthy fats fights diabetes!

Beta Carotene and Strokes

As one ages, the risk of a stroke happening increases. What can you do to help lower the risks? Studies at Harvard show that ensuring a good supply of beta carotene in your diet may be one way to lower those risks.

For example, carrots were found to be very valuable in preventing stroke. A recent Harvard study demonstrated that eating carrots five times a week or more can reduce the risk of stroke drastically by two-thirds, compared with eating carrots only once a month or less often. This conclusion was reached after observing nearly 90,000 women nurses over an eight year period.

Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant, protecting the cells of the body from damage caused by free radicals. It is also one of the carotenoids believed to enhance the function of the immune system. Beta carotene also appears to stimulate cell to cell communication.

Spinach is another vegetable found valuable in the prevention and treatment of stroke. The protection seems to come partly from beta carotene in carrots and spinach. A previous Harvard study found that eating the extra beta carotene in about one and a half carrots, which equals 200 g of mashed sweet potatoes or 170 g spinach (weighed raw and then cooked) every day saved 40 per cent off stroke rates. The drop was evident in those who ate 15-20 mg of beta carotene daily compared to those who ate only 6 mg. The anti stroke activity in carrots, spinach and other carotene-rich vegetables seems to emanate from their antioxidant properties.

So can what you eat make a difference in your health? Yes, start adding more fresh vegetables such as carrots, yams, spinach, romaine lettuce, cilantro and even cantaloupe.

Are you dealing with a stroke or with someone who has had a stroke. I recommend: Life after a Stroke, to help you cope and improve your situation.

Mind over Fibromyalgia

Recent studies of sufferers from Fibromyalgia have shown biofeedback techniques can bring relief from symptoms.

Biofeedback is a technique that measures bodily functions (like breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and muscle tension) and teaches one to alter these functions through relaxation or imagery.

Those who suffer the pain caused by Fibromyalgia know how difficult it is to treat this disease. Why? Because the condition varies widely from patient to patient and the causes are are often hard to pinpoint. Stress and fatigue often aggravate the symptoms. Anything that will help the patient to relax and cut down on stress should have a positive effect on symptoms.

Thus it is no surprise that patients who learn to visualize their pain centers and mentally ask those areas to "quiet down" can be helped.

Continued awareness of where you body is at, physically, emotionally and nutritionally can be keys to curing Fibromyalgia. Biofeedback techniques can be one component of learning to fight and win over this disease.

Red is for Your Heart

If you are concerned about the health of your heart, you have probably become aware of the value of sipping red wine. Studies have shown that moderate red wine drinkers suffer lower rates of heart disease than the average population. But that general statement needs to be clarified.

The preventative value of wine is highest with those people who limit themselves to two or three small glasses (around 125 ml) a day. And who drink their wine with food. To receive these benefits it is also necessary to drink small amounts of wine everyday. Drinking wine just occasionally maybe a nice way to enjoy wine, but it limits the healthier heart values.

Why is there a focus on red wine? It is the highly tannic wines which contain chemicals shown to protect against the danger of heart disease, as well as strokes, diabetes, dementia and possibly some cancers. Basically, red wines are fermented in containers which hold both grape juices and grape skins. In white wines, the grape skins are kept out. These grape skins contain high amounts of tannic acid and other chemicals that remain in the wine after the grape skins are filtered out. You can recognize the tannic flavor in a wine by the way the wine makes your mouth pucker slightly.

So to take advantage of the heart healthy properties of wine, drink red wine in moderation, everyday, while eating food.

Tans May Look Healthy, But Raise the Risk of Skin Cancer

According to the OrlandoSentinal.com:

"In the United States, one person dies almost every hour from skin cancer.

"The incidence of melanoma is increasing rapidly in women under the age of 40. It is now the most common cancer in young women ages 25-29, and second only to breast cancer in women ages 30-34. Skin cancer is the leading cancer in men over age 50, ahead of prostate, lung and colon cancer.

"A person's risk for skin cancer doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns..." To read the rest of the story, click here.

Teens and especially female teens seemed convinced that having a tan makes you look healthy. And they are ready to risk shortening their lives for a "golden glow." Melanoma is no joke nor is the saying "looks to die for!" And yet for the sake of "looks" young tanners are risking death.

Get smart, wear more sunscreen and a hat, and lets start featuring more pasty models in the magazines and on TV! For more info on protecting yourself from skin cancer, go to Skin Cancer Protection, Misconceptions.

Banking on Cord Blood

A recent study concerning the use of umbilical cord blood and Type 1 diabetes in children offers some help to those children.

According to a news release issued by the University of Florida:

"The work carried out in the University of Florida has led the field in showing that cord blood contains cells which can quieten the immune system attack on the patient's pancreas," McGuckin said. "We know that cord blood contains very specialized cells which are there to stop rejection of the placenta of the child to the mother during pregnancy, and these are likely to be the ones which are useful for treatment in type 1 diabetes. Together with our work, showing that beta cells producing insulin can be formed using cord blood, we are on track to help diabetes patients in the future. The first step, though, has to be quietening the immune system attack, and this is why the work in Gainesville is so important."

Basically, children who were given cord blood stored after their birth showed an improvement in insulin production. Exactly why this improvement occurred is not exactly known. Still the results are encouraging and may lead to improved treatment of Type 1 diabetes in the future.

Such a study does show that cord blood should be stored in a blood bank for every new child born on the planet to help in future health needs of the child. A tall order, no doubt, but something that should be started in trail programs, today. Using the body to heal the body seems common sense to me.

About Yeast Infections.

Did you know that your skin can get a yeast infection?

There are many types of yeast infections: Oral infections or Thrush, Skin fold infections or Intertrigo, Nail fold infections, Penile infection or Balanitis, Genital infection in women or Vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Candidiasis, the general name for yeast infections, can occur when the body's defenses are low. Other contributing factors include living in a warm climate, pregnancy, contraceptive pills, diabetes, iron deficiency and overuse of antibiotics, Additionally, if you have some skin disease such as lichen planus, psoriasis, etc., you are more likely to develop a yeast infection. Candidiasis is also a problem with those who are on long-term steroids use or those who have HIV infection.

Candidiasis is caused by the yeast candida, a fungus. Candida is a common name of a group of yeasts, the trouble maker is c.albicans. Candida is common yeast which lives along with the normal bacteria (the good bacteria) in the human digestive track. Normally it is not a problem, but attacks occur whenever the body's immune system is weakened.

Are you bothered by itching and burning in sensitive areas? You may have a yeast infection. For more information about yeast infections and how to naturally prevent them, get the e-book, Yeast Infection No More, at Yeast Infection No More.

Diet is a powerful drug for healing

Here are a two paragraphs from a story in the June 13, 2007 online version of the Journal Star:

"Think of food as a powerful drug that can maintain health and reverse disease."

That's the message Dr. Neal Barnard will deliver in Peoria next week. A physician, author and leading authority on eating to combat disease, Barnard will talk about a new diet to fight diabetes, arthritis, weight gain, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and disease."

For the rest of the story go to: PJStar.com.

Diet Cures! - This is the realization I came to a few years ago, fighting my own health battles. Which is why I put together my website which features various e-books whose basis is how particular changes in diet and other natural methods can reverse diabetes, cure cancer and heart disease and other ailments.

I noticed that there were news stories all the time about the positive effects of diet changes, but the message was scattered. Thus, this blog. Diet is the foundation of lifelong good health. Look at the food you are eating, today.

Vitamin D and Calcium Together Reduces Risk of Cancer!

According to a Creighton Press Release,OMAHA, Neb., June 8 - Americans are not taking enough vitamin D, which may put them at significant risk for developing cancer!

A four-year, randomized study conducted by the Creighton University School of Medicine followed 1,179 healthy, postmenopausal women from rural eastern Nebraska. Participants taking calcium, as well as a quantity of vitamin D3 nearly three times the U.S. government's Recommended Daily Amount (RDA) for middle-age adults, showed a dramatic 60 percent or greater reduction in cancer risk than women who did not get the vitamin.

The results of this study, conducted between 2000 and 2005, were reported in the June 8 online edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Research participants were all 55 years and older and free of known cancers for at least 10 years prior to entering the Creighton study. Subjects were randomly assigned to take daily dosages of 1,400-1,500 mg supplemental calcium, 1,400-1,500 mg supplemental calcium plus 1,100 IU of vitamin D3, or placebos.

Over the course of four years, women in the calcium/vitamin D3 group experienced a 60 percent decrease in their cancer risk than the group taking placebos.

More about Vitamin D:  There is a growing body of evidence that a higher intake of vitamin D may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of cancer, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases.

More information about this story can be found at American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Once again, diet makes a difference! This latest study shows that making a change in your diet can help prevent cancer and other diseases. For more information about curing and preventing cancer through diet and other natural means, please visit:

Diabetes Prevention - Stay Away From Corn Syrup

According to a news article on Medical News Today mice fed on a high fat and fructose corn syrup diet quickly developed the first symptoms of glucose intolerance - the beginning of type II diabetes!

The research done Brent Tetri, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine at Saint Louis University Liver Center mimicked the typical meals served at fast food restaurants. The mice were not forced to eat, but ate when they were hungry over a 15 week period. A conclusion of the study is that:

"A high-fat and sugar-sweetened diet compounded by a sedentary lifestyle will have severe repercussions for your liver and other vital organs," Dr. Tetri says. "Fatty liver disease now affects about one of every eight children in this country. The good news is that it is somewhat reversible - but for some it will take major changes in diet and lifestyle."

Stay away from high fat content and fructose corn syrup! A change in your diet can have a profound effect. For more information on controlling and/or losing weight visit, Dieting-Help.com.
